So when Ree Drummond gives a specific command in her recipes, she absolutely means it. No shenanigans. Or you’ll end up like me and this raspberry cobbler mess.

Yeah, even down to the type of cream… I’ve made the potato bundles many times now and decided to use single cream instead of double cream/heavy cream when making them for my mother - alas, everything comes out curdled. Fail. I unfortunately have a boyfriend with a dairy allergy/intolerance (it acts like an intolerance but he reacts to the skin test as well, so it’s an allergy I think) so I really need to be careful when I use butter/cream in cooking.

She used self-rising flour in these and was specific about using the real thing. I make my own self-rising at home by just adding salt and baking powder in the right amounts to all-purpose and it’s never failed me before; I’ve baked with it often enough. But with the cobbler batter, she was not kidding, it apparently matters. We munched on the mess I was able to rescue from the pan and it did still taste good… just not as good as it could have. :)

"Suffering from brain cancer, Kent Pankow was literally forced to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,..."

“Suffering from brain cancer, Kent Pankow was literally forced to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. for lifesaving surgery — at a cost to family and friends of $106,000 — after the health-care system in Alberta left him hanging in bureaucratic limbo for 16 crucial days, his tumour meanwhile migrating to an unreachable part of the brain, while it dithered over his case file, ultimately deciding he was not surgery worthy.

Now, with the Mayo Clinic having done what the Alberta Cancer Board wouldn’t authorize or even explain, but with the tumour unable to be totally removed, the province will now not fund the expensive drug, Avastin, that the Mayo prescribed to keep him alive and keep the remaining tumour from increasing in size — despite the costs of the drug being totally funded by the province for other forms of cancer.

Kent Pankow, as it turns out, has the right disease but he has it in the wrong place. Had he lung cancer, breast cancer, or colon cancer, then the cost of the drug — $4,555 per treatment, two times a month — would be totally covered by Alberta’s version of OHIP.

But he doesn’t. And so he is not only a victim of brain cancer, he is also a victim of arbitrary discrimination.”

-
Toronto Sun (via sds)

A while back Shannon sent me a link to a thrifty blogger’s post detailing how she fed herself and her boyfriend for a week just on one large roasted chicken plus veggies, spices, and such from her pantry to make different recipes. It was decided… this we must attempt.

We went grocery shopping at 2am last night (go us!) and all the store pretty much had out for whole chickens were frozen. So Mr. Ice Bird is sitting in a pan of water in the fridge hopefully to be defrosted enough come dinner time. We ended up spending a little more $$ on other ingredients than the blogger because we’re still slowly stocking our pantry and spice rack, but, considering I have a guaranteed five meals planned, plus whatever leftovers of which there will be plenty will be made into other lunches or reheated, it was really cheap.

We’re having a very simple but promising lemon roasted chicken with veggies this evening to kick off the week and cook the bird. Then we get to clean the carcass of the meat, which, I must admit, I’m a little too excited about.

Photo

Finally, A Push-Up Panty for the Penis (NSFW) »...

Finally, A Push-Up Panty for the Penis (NSFW) » Sociological Images

I love pancakes.

But I think my favorite part of the whole pancake experience is not the pancake breakfast itself, but what happens to the leftovers.

(which is what the movie is based on)”

I don’t understand how he wasn’t meant to be an impacting character. The movie was practically built around him after his introduction. We meet the Mad Hatter, and then, he saves Alice, he transports Alice, it is through him the back story of the Red Queen is related to Alice, he gives up his freedom for Alice, who decides to then rescue him, so he’s a definite plot point there. He has multiple scenes throughout Alice’s shenanigans at the red castle, he leads the revolution of the little people at his own beheading, and when he shows up safe and sound at the white castle there’s much rejoicing. He helps Alice during the final battle, and her last moments in Wonderland are spent staring longingly at his face. And when she’s back on Earth, her final fuck you to the folks that inspired the Wonderland characters is to dance a jig she learned from who? Oh, the Hatter.

I’ve never read the real deal. It’s always been on my list but never gotten to. If that movie script was based directly on Carroll’s writing, I’d have to say the Hatter is actually quite important to the tale. I thought Carroll’s story was supposed to be much more about the creepy characters themselves and Alice’s internal development because of her encounters with them, and that’s not what I got out of the film. It felt like a green-eyed, red-haired Deppfest. Except I didn’t like him much. Just saying.

Alice In Wonderland:

I’m sorry to burst any bubbles that are still quivering in anticipation, but, the film is frankly a lot of pretty fluff. There really wasn’t enough satisfying meat to the character development or the story— and I know what you’re thinking, it’s a story we all already know, what was I expecting— but when you see it, you’ll understand. It lacks depth.

It felt like it lacked Depp, too. I mean, he’s there, and he’s in character, which he’s good at being, but he didn’t have enough dialog to shine. You can’t understand half of what he says. Yes, I know, he’s the mad hatter, but they went too far with the madness and I couldn’t connect with character or actor. Not to mention, the job they do on his eyes is just freaking weird, too weird, and a constant distraction. Every time there was a face shot of the character, my mind went WHAT THE FUCK and forgot everything else that was happening in the surrounding scenes. It’s like they threw one of those “When you see it you’ll shit bricks” memes repeatedly into the movie.

I mean, it was decent. It certainly had some tasty art in it. I chuckled a few times and fell a little in love with Alice when she found her muchness at the end. And I won’t lie, it was nice to see a movie heroine with blonde hair and brown eyes. It’s not a common color combination on the big screen, and there’s still a little girl in me that pines for blue peepers every now and then, so seeing my color set portrayed so gorgeously on a giant screen was refreshing.

Sadly, my opinion: don’t pay nine bucks to see it. Rent it once it’s out on DVD.

And it’s not even something I’d really care to own.

Sigh. Disappointment.

Today.

I don’t want you to need me today.
